Pickleball's origins can be traced back to 1965, when it was played on Bainbridge Island (Washington). Joel Pritchard (a friend) and Bill Bell (a businessman) invented pickleball. Before creating the first formal court, they experimented with different rackets. Pickles, Pickles' dog, became involved and chased the ball around their yard. Pickles would chase the ball back when it was out-of-bounds.

Whidbey Island's neighbor provided another inspiration source for pickleball. He built a court in his back yard. This was the first known pickleball court. A court was constructed in Olympia, Washington during 1967. The community soon joined the fray. Finally, a paved pickleball field was built in Tacoma Washington.

The 1980s were another important year in pickleball's history. Sid Williams, Mark Friedenberg and their first President and Executive Directors were elected to the United States Amateur Pickleball Association. Pickleball's national development began with the establishment of the association. Pickleball has been a very popular sport in America since its beginnings in the Pacific Northwest.

The New York Capital Region's pickleball scene is growing in popularity. The area saw an increase in pickleball players last year by 12%. Places2Play provides a list of local pickleball courts. Many parks and recreational areas are putting pickleball courts on the line.
