The History of Wimbledon

pickleball rules and scoring

Wimbledon is one the four major Grand Slam tournaments of tennis. The US Open, Australian Open and French Open are the other three. These events are held over two weeks in late summer.

The first Wimbledon Championships were held in 1877. The tournament was mainly for amateur players at the time. It was played in a grass court. In 1975, however, the event was moved to clay courts. In the first Championship, 22 men participated.

In 1884, the event was expanded to include singles and doubles for women. Mixed doubles was first introduced in 1913. The number and popularity of women playing tennis rose from four million to eleven million in the first ten decades of the twenty-first century.

In 1999, Billie Jean King, a professional tennis player, was the highest-ranked female athlete in the world. She won the Australian Open and the U.S. Nationals in 1999. In 1967, she also won the Wimbledon Singles Championship. She worked as an activist to promote equality of gender and LGBTQ+ issues. She was awarded 39 Grand Slam titles over her career. When she was ranked number one, she and her husband, Larry, supported each other and their children.

Tennis has a rich history. In the medieval period, the game was invented. Walter C. Wingfield, however, patented the modern version of the sport in Great Britain in 1874. Tennis clubs eventually emerged in New York City, Chicago and elsewhere. A challenge system was used in the US Open from 1884 through 1911. This system challenged players not in the top 50.

Grand Slams are a goal for many professional players. But it's hard to win. Only a tiny percentage of players are able to compete in each of the four tournaments. After becoming the most successful woman in tennis, Venus Williams won in 2006 the Wimbledon singles title for women.

Eight American men have made it to the third round of Grand Slam since 1996. This means that 25% if the 32 last spots in any of the tournaments is filled by Americans. Currently, there are no Americans in the top 10 of the tennis rankings.

The Grand Slam is not affected by World War I or II, or by the COVID-19 pandemic that is expected to hit the United States in 2020. The US Open has always been the most highly-paid Grand Slam. In 2019, the total prize money for the US Open is estimated at $57 million USD.

Despite being the most lucrative of the four majors in terms of earnings, the US Open has very little advertising. ESPN broadcasts the tournament. In recent years, ESPN also has full control over televising this event. The Wimbledon tournament aired on TV until 2022.

Wimbledon is one the oldest tournaments around the globe. The All England Club hosts the tournament since 1877. All players are required to wear white clothes. Wimbledon offers the following competitions: the Gentlemen's Doubles (male and female), the Ladies' Doubles (female) and the Mixed Doubles (male and female).
