How to Play Bocce

Bocce Ball is a sport that involves two teams. This is an excellent way to bring friends and family members together for a friendly game of competition.

How to Play

The first team or person tosses out a pallino (the smaller target or object ball that comes with a set of bocce balls). They then take turns throwing their bocce balls trying to get closer to the pallino than the opponent's. They are then called "inside" and the other team has to throw their bocce balls to try to get closer to the pallino.

Whenever one side's bocce ball lands inside the opposing team's bocce ball, that team steps aside and lets the other team roll their ball. This rule is also known as "nearest ball". The game is played alternately until each side has rolled all its bocce balls.

There are 3 types of throws used in competitive bocce - raffa (punto), volo (volo) and punto. Before delivering the bocceball, players in competitive bocce must tell the referee which throw type they will be using.

When playing a game of bocce, there should be a foul line on the court to keep players from stepping over it while throwing their bocce ball. When a player steps over the foul-line, they receive a warning. Then their team loses some points.

A bocceball must be thrown away at least four feet from the rear wall or it is considered an offense. If a bocce ball hits the back wall or goes out of bounds, it is also considered a foul.


The bocce game has four balls per team, and each ball is made in a unique color or pattern. This helps to distinguish the balls from those of the other team. Before the start of a game, each team determines which color their bocceballs will be.

Each team has a designated playing rotation. The rotation is set at the start and maintained through the whole game.

Once the playing rotation is established, each player may only throw two bocce balls at a time and each player must rotate around their partner in the same direction each round. It is a good thing to do because this ensures all players get an equal chance at playing.

It can be played either by two players against eachother, or by teams of 2, 3, or 4 players. The goal is to score the most "inside" bocce balls.

A foul in bocceball has the same consequences. If a player commits foul, he or she must stop the game and return the bocce to the court.

How to Displace a Ball

The displaced ball may be the pallino, your opponent's bocce ball, or another ball on the court that is not within the play zone. This throw is called a raffa and must be declared before the bocceball is thrown.
