Bocce ball is a popular recreational and competitive sport played by two teams of players. It's a great game to play with your friends or family.

How to Play

The first person, team, or group tosses the pallino out (the smaller ball or target that comes included with each set of bocceballs). After that, each team or person takes turns tossing bocce balls in an attempt to get theirs closer to the target ball than the other's. The bocceball that is closest to the pallino wins the "inside" award.

The "nearest ball" rule is used when the bocceball on one side lands inside that of the opposing bocceball. That team then steps aside, allowing the other to roll their bocce. This is the "nearestball" rule. The game will continue until both sides roll all of their bocceballs.

Rules of Competitive & Recreational Bocce

There are three throws types in competitive Bocce: punto and volo. In competitive bocce, players must declare which type of throw they are taking to the referee before they deliver the bocce ball.

The foul line is a must when playing the game of Bocce. This will prevent players from stepping on it and losing points. When a player steps over the foul-line, they receive a warning. Then their team loses some points.

A bocceball must be thrown away at least four feet from the rear wall or it is considered an offense. If a ball is hit by the wall behind it or flies out of bounds then that's also a foul.


The four balls that each team uses in bocce are of a distinct color or design to make them stand out from the balls used by the other teams. Each team picks its color before the game starts.

Each team has a designated playing rotation. The rotation is set at the start and maintained through the whole game.

Once the playing rotation is established, each player may only throw two bocce balls at a time and each player must rotate around their partner in the same direction each round. It is a good thing to do because this ensures all players get an equal chance at playing.

It can be played with two players or two teams, each consisting of three, four, or five players. The objective of the game involves scoring as many "inside balls" as possible.

There are a few fouls in bocce ball, but they all have the same outcome. If the player commits a bocceball foul, they must stop throwing their ball and return it to the court.
