Pickleball attracts people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. It has one important difference: The balls are bigger. It's also played with larger paddles, as opposed to ping-pong. And it involves more strategy and collaboration.

How it got its Name:

Joel Pritchard Barney McCallum Bill Bell invented the sport in 1965, on Bainbridge Island Washington. The game was called Pickles in honor of their dog Pickles. Pickles would always chase after the ball, and then bring it to them.

The first court was constructed in their backyard. Five-years later, the couple formed a corporation for protection and to make pickleball official. The new sport became very popular across the country after they spread the word.

When the National Observer published an article about the sport for the first time, it brought pickleball to a much higher level of popularity and resulted in a huge increase in orders for pickleball sports products. It was called "America’s newest racquetsport" in the article.
