Pickleball began in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Joel Pritchard was a friend of Bill Bell who both worked in the business world. They invented pickleball. Before creating the first court, they tried different court layouts and rackets. Pickles, Pickles' canine companion, began to chase the ball in the yard. The dog would chase after the ball if it got out of control.


Whidbey Island neighbor was also a source of inspiration. He constructed a permanent court in his yard. This was the first ever pickleball court. A court was constructed in Olympia, Washington during 1967. Soon, the community was involved. In Tacoma Washington, eventually, a paved pickleball courts was constructed.

The 1980s saw another pivotal moment in the history of pickleball. Sid Williams and Mark Friedenberg became the first Presidents and Executive Directors of the United States Amateur Pickleball Association. Pickleball developed on a national basis after the organization was established. Since then, the sport has spread beyond its roots in the Pacific Northwest to all states and has become one of America's most popular sports.

Pickleball is growing in popularity in the New York Capital Region. The number of pickleball enthusiasts in the region increased by 12% last year. Places2Play provides a list of local pickleball courts. Many parks, recreational facilities and other places are marking lines on their courts for pickleball.

Leigh Waters was a well-known player in pickleball. Anna Leigh, however, was not interested in discussing her rival. Both women were naturally talented athletes.
