Pickleball Rules in 2021

The USA Pickleball Rules Committee made significant changes to the rules over the past year. While most of the changes were minor in nature, there were many significant rule innovations. These are just a few.

One of the most interesting changes is the introduction of the drop serve. This is the latest in pickleball's quest to make its service more competitive and fun. Drop serves are designed to be slightly better than traditional in-air volleyball serve. The new rule may not be for the most experienced players but it is expected to bring some benefits to beginners.

Another interesting rule is the elimination or "let" serves. This was once a common rule in pickleball. It required a player to hit the ball into his net, and then return it back to his partner. However, this was a clumsy rule that didn't really do much to improve player safety. USA Pickleball Rules Committee subsequently removed "let" from their rule book.

Other rule changes are possible. One of the most important is the removal of the no volley-zone line. This line was previously used to ensure that the serve did not land in the no volley-zone. This is a change that has allowed the line to be used for pickleball.

The rulebook has also been updated with a new term. According to the rules, the name for a pickleball Court is now "plane of the net". Picking up and moving a served ball is another area where you need to be careful.

Other changes include the elimination of the "chainsaw" serve. Zane Navratil was the first to popularize this type of serve. Players had to use the "spin serve" because the chainsaw was prohibited in competition play.

Although the rules of pickleball have changed, they are still very similar to the ones from the past. The Code of Ethics remains the responsibility of all players. Some other rule updates clarify that the referee should not stop a rally for technical warnings. If the double hit is continuous, it's a valid fault.

The most important changes to the official rulebook are the removal of the no volley-zone, the omission of the no-odds-mimir's-mimir's-mimir's, and the new "Drop Serve." The new rulebook can be downloaded online in pdf format.
